Algeria Condemns Israeli Move, Urges African Unity on Somalia

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria has strongly condemned Israel’s recent actions regarding Somalia and called for a unified African response to protect the country’s sovereignty. The condemnation came during a ministerial meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, held virtually to address the evolving situation in the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The meeting focused on the serious implications of Israel’s move to recognize the self-declared “Somaliland,” a decision that has sparked widespread concern across Africa and the international community.

Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, reiterated Algeria’s firm condemnation of this unilateral action during his address. He affirmed Algeria’s unwavering solidarity with Somalia in its efforts to preserve its national unity and territorial integrity. Attaf warned that this move represents an attempt to create a new hotspot of tension and instability in the Horn of Africa, adding to the crises and conflicts already fueled by Israeli policies in other regions.

The Minister emphasized that this recognition constitutes a grave violation of a fundamental African principle: respect for borders inherited from colonialism. He further stated that it is a clear breach of the basic principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, posing a direct threat to efforts to establish security and stability in Somalia and the region as a whole.

“The current situation demands a collective African commitment to strengthen unity in the face of all attempts to destabilize states and undermine their sovereignty,” Attaf stated. He stressed the need to defend the rules and principles upon which the African and United Nations systems are based, ensuring peace and security on the continent.

Algeria maintains that a united African front is crucial to safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and preventing further destabilization in the Horn of Africa.
