Algeria has strongly advocated for enhanced African unity in response to destabilizing efforts targeting Somalia. This call to action was emphasized during a recent ministerial meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, conducted via video conference. The meeting primarily addressed the evolving situation in the Federal Republic of Somalia, specifically focusing on the recognition of ‘Somaliland’ by Israel.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, reiterated Algeria’s condemnation of Israel’s unilateral action and expressed solidarity with Somalia. He stated that Israel, having instigated turmoil in the Middle East, is now attempting to create a new source of tension and conflict within the Horn of Africa.
Minister Attaf emphasized that Israel’s actions are a grave concern not only for Somalia but also for the African region and the international community. He highlighted the threat this poses to Somalia’s efforts to consolidate national unity and the potential for increased instability in the Horn of Africa. Furthermore, he underscored that this action violates a fundamental African principle of respecting borders inherited upon independence and contravenes the core principles of the international order and the United Nations Charter.
