The Algerian national team, Les Fennecs, have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the 12th time in their history. This achievement marks another significant milestone in Algeria’s rich footballing legacy on the continent.
Having participated in 21 AFCON tournaments, Algeria’s consistent presence in the latter stages underscores their status as a major force in African football. Prior to the 2025 edition, Algeria had reached the quarter-finals on 11 occasions, experiencing both triumphs and setbacks.
In four instances, their journey ended in the quarter-finals, with defeats against South Africa (1996), Cameroon (2000), Morocco (2004), and Ivory Coast (2015). However, Algeria also secured third-place finishes in four editions, overcoming Zambia (1982), Egypt (1984), Morocco (1988), and Nigeria (2010).
Algeria has reached the AFCON final three times, suffering a defeat to Nigeria in 1980 before claiming victory on home soil against the same opponent in 1990. They then secured their second title in 2019 against Senegal.
With their advancement to the quarter-finals in the 2025 tournament, Algeria further solidifies its position among Africa’s elite footballing nations. This consistent performance highlights the team’s historical strength, resilience, and unwavering determination to compete for continental glory.
