Israeli authorities have extended the detention of a Palestinian bus driver from Jerusalem and charged him with “intentional homicide” following an incident where a demonstrator was killed. The driver, identified as Fakhri al-Khatib, allegedly struck the individual while attempting to escape a mob of protestors who had surrounded his bus.
According to a statement released by the Jerusalem Governorate, the charge stems from an incident that occurred during a demonstration in occupied Jerusalem. A young Israeli man was killed during the event. The Governorate maintains that evidence suggests al-Khatib was attempting to flee a dangerous situation.
The statement highlights that al-Khatib was allegedly surrounded by an angry crowd who subjected him to direct attacks and threats. Critically, no Israeli security forces were present for a significant period leading up to the incident. Reports indicate that al-Khatib contacted Israeli emergency services prior to the incident, informing them of the attack and requesting assistance. However, no help arrived in time.
Initial reports suggest the bus driver’s actions were motivated by a desire to escape a collective assault, not to inflict harm, the Governorate added.
Video footage circulating on social media purportedly shows dozens of religious Jews surrounding and attacking the bus. In the video, one individual appears to be caught on the front of the vehicle as the driver attempts to flee the scene.
The Wadi Hilweh Information Center, a human rights organization, stated that al-Khatib’s detention was extended in connection with a traffic incident that occurred during a protest against conscription laws. The center quoted al-Khatib as saying he inadvertently entered a street where a demonstration was taking place. He claims protestors surrounded his bus, spat at him, and attacked him. Al-Khatib maintains he informed the police that he was in danger.
The driver’s lawyer, Gad al-Qudmani, has filed an appeal against the Israeli court’s decision to detain his client for nine days. A hearing is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the Central Court. The case remains highly sensitive and is being closely monitored.
