Lumumba’s Grandson: Lumumba’s History Part of Algeria’s Glory

Algiers – In a firm response aimed at quashing attempts to incite discord and exploit a recent sporting event for political gain, Amuri François, the grandson of the late Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba, has reaffirmed a historical truth often overlooked: that Patrice Lumumba is an integral part of Algeria’s glorious history and its struggle for independence. He emphasized the deep interconnectedness of the two nations’ histories.

Speaking to media, François Lumumba highlighted historical facts that are either unknown or deliberately ignored by some. He suggested that the actions of Algerian player Mohamed Amine Amoura reflected a lack of understanding of his own Algerian history. Specifically, a failure to recognize that Patrice Lumumba is not merely a Congolese symbol, but a fundamental part of Algeria’s own liberation struggle.

In a powerful statement encapsulating the depth of the historical relationship between the two countries, François Lumumba stated, “Our countries’ histories are intertwined.” He emphasized that Algeria was not simply a supporter of liberation movements in Africa, but a central figure in the African struggle against colonialism, and Lumumba was part of this shared struggle.

Addressing those attempting to exploit the incident to undermine Algeria and distort its history, Lumumba’s grandson made a poignant point: “Simply put, disrespecting Patrice Lumumba is equivalent to disrespecting the hundreds of thousands of Algerians who sacrificed their lives for the very ideals that this young player now embraces.” This statement underscores the deep historical and militant connection between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, asserting that Lumumba was not a stranger to the Algerian revolution and its struggle, but an active component of the African liberation movement spearheaded by Algeria. The ideals for which Lumumba fought are the same ideals for which one and a half million Algerian martyrs fell.

François Lumumba also pointed to a genuine ignorance of the shared heritage between North and Sub-Saharan Africa. He hopes his words can serve as a reminder of the strong, historical ties between the two nations.
