Abidjan, Ivory Coast – Predi Soumaila Kouassi, a prominent Ivorian politician and spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI), has been granted conditional release after being detained for over a month. His legal team announced the development Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Kouassi, who also serves as a Deputy representing the Tankesse constituency, was arrested on November 26, 2025, upon his return to Abidjan after several months abroad. The public prosecutor’s office in Abidjan has charged him with a series of serious offenses, including acts of terrorism, incitement to rebellion, and promoting hatred and discrimination.
The charges also include allegations of theft, arson of public and private property, incitement to murder, and conspiracy against state authority. Additional accusations relate to endangering state security and inciting public disobedience.
His legal team stated that this conditional release marks a significant step in the legal proceedings. They affirmed that their client will continue to cooperate fully with the judicial process, maintaining his innocence.
Political Context
Kouassi’s arrest and subsequent release occur amidst heightened political tensions in Ivory Coast. Observers view the case as a test of the relationship between the ruling power and the opposition, and of the judiciary’s ability to handle politically sensitive cases. Some analysts suggest that the conditional release may trigger further political and legal debate, especially as the country approaches crucial elections.
The case continues to draw national attention, raising questions about the state of political freedom and justice in Ivory Coast.
