Algiers, January 10, 2026 – A significant nationwide campaign to rehabilitate and maintain Algeria’s road network, including its highways, was officially launched today, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure.
The Ministry stated that this initiative, spearheaded under the direction of Minister Abdelkader Djellaoui, commenced this morning at 8:00 AM near the Chaaoua tunnel exit in Khraicia, along Algiers’ second bypass. The launch signifies a renewed commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of the nation’s roadways.
“Concluding 2025, this operation reflects the sector’s ongoing dedication to guaranteeing the quality and safety of the road network,” the statement emphasized, “through the execution of high-quality interventions that culminated in the delivery of several vital projects within the maintenance program.”
The Ministry highlighted that a total of 2,300 kilometers of national and local roads have already benefited from regular maintenance operations, ensuring their durability and optimal usability. Furthermore, 28.4 kilometers of deteriorated highway sections across 10 provinces have been repaired, aiming to enhance the quality of transportation and improve traffic safety for all road users.
A technical assessment covering 51 kilometers of highways in Algiers, Blida, Boumerdes, and Bouira provinces has been completed, enabling a precise diagnosis and identification of priority intervention areas for the future. Current works are progressing on several fronts, including the repair of 16.3 kilometers of deteriorated highways and the replacement of 1,791 linear meters of expansion joints on various technical structures across the highway network. Additionally, 1,800 kilometers of national and local roads are undergoing maintenance to maintain the network at the highest levels of service and quality.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Ministry revealed an ambitious investment program focused on modernizing and strengthening the entire road infrastructure and the national highway network. Plans include reinforcing 51 kilometers of highways, 1,000 kilometers of national roads, and 100 kilometers of local roads. These efforts will be complemented by resurfacing works covering 600 kilometers of roadways, ensuring a smoother and safer driving experience for all Algerians.
