ALGIERS, January 11, 2026 – Twenty-two individuals across several Algerian provinces have been hospitalized in the last 24 hours due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The alarming incidents highlight the continued dangers posed by faulty heating appliances and inadequate ventilation.
According to a report released by the General Directorate of Civil Protection, emergency services responded to eight separate incidents involving carbon monoxide poisoning during this period. In total, 22 people required medical assistance and were subsequently transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The Civil Protection agency reported a total of 2,638 interventions across the country within the same 24-hour timeframe, averaging one intervention every 32 seconds. This underscores the immense pressure faced by emergency responders in addressing a wide range of incidents, including gas-related emergencies and traffic accidents.
Tragically, road accidents also claimed lives and caused numerous injuries. The Civil Protection reported 142 interventions related to traffic accidents, resulting in four fatalities and 168 injuries. These figures serve as a stark reminder of the need for increased road safety awareness and responsible driving practices.
Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and vigilance regarding the proper maintenance of heating systems and ensuring adequate ventilation in their homes to prevent further incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning. Regular inspections of gas appliances by qualified technicians are strongly recommended, particularly during the colder months when heating systems are used more frequently. The Civil Protection emphasizes the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of carbon monoxide and preventative measures.
