Algeria Plans Projects to Bolster Journalists’ Rights

Algiers, January 13, 2026 – The Algerian Ministry of Communication is developing a series of projects aimed at strengthening the rights of journalists and enhancing their role in modern media, according to Minister of Communication Zohir Bouamama.

During a seminar held at the ministry headquarters, Minister Bouamama outlined several key initiatives. These include a draft executive decree establishing the fundamental law for journalists, as well as a draft executive decree defining the conditions, procedures, and authority responsible for issuing the national professional journalist card.

Furthermore, the ministry is revisiting Presidential Decree No. 15-133, dated May 21, 2015, concerning the creation of the President of the Republic’s Prize for the Professional Journalist. This review aims to encourage and promote journalistic performance by revising the prize’s monetary value, award criteria, and the categories eligible to participate in the competition.

“The foundation and objective of our ministry’s efforts are to ensure respect for the intellectual property rights of media professionals and to leverage communication channels and the efforts of all journalists to contribute to raising awareness and promoting copyright in various disciplines, arts, and sciences,” Minister Bouamama stated.

He added, “Journalists are also responsible for safeguarding our heritage, which has attracted the attention of both amateur and professional plagiarists due to its creative and aesthetic imprints that withstand time. We must refute attempts at misinformation that aim to undermine our cultural heritage and the innovations of our predecessors and those who follow, by ensuring its registration, protection, and widespread dissemination.”

Minister Bouamama also praised the President’s call to young Algerians abroad facing difficult, precarious, and illegal situations. He stated these individuals were misled by those who sought to damage the state’s credibility and exploit them against their country, using them as fuel in hostile campaigns targeting Algeria by well-known actors.
