Algiers, DZWatch – Algeria has significantly enhanced its presence and influence within the African Union (AU) throughout 2025, driven by a clear strategy and proactive diplomacy under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This approach is rooted in deeply historical principles and a rational, constructive methodology aimed at defending the interests of the African continent, reinforcing its sovereignty, and solidifying its position on the international stage in the face of evolving global and continental challenges.
Algeria’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Africa and its people has translated into tangible achievements within the AU framework. A key milestone was the election of Ambassador Salima Malika Hadadi as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission in February 2025. This victory underscores Algeria’s prominent role within the continent and reflects the confidence of AU member states in its leadership.
Furthermore, Algerian diplomacy actively supported the adoption of the Statute of the Continental Mechanism for Disaster Prevention and Response, an initiative spearheaded by President Tebboune. Algeria also played a crucial role in securing the approval of its proposal to establish an African Day to commemorate the memory of African martyrs and victims of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and apartheid. The adoption of the Oran Declaration, emanating from the 2024 African Youth Forum, was another notable success.
Guided by a transparent vision focused on contributing to AU decision-making in the realm of peace and security, Algeria secured a seat on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) for a three-year term (2025-2028). This election reflects the high regard that African nations hold for Algerian diplomacy, recognizing it as a force for peace committed to its historical principles of defending just causes and fostering stability across the continent.
During its presidency of the AU Peace and Security Council in August, led by Mohamed Khaled, Algeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU, the nation assumed the responsibility of developing initiatives aligned with political and security priorities, seeking African solutions to the crises and conflicts plaguing the continent. Algeria’s commitment to a strong and stable Africa remains unwavering.
