A Danish parliamentarian has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating crisis surrounding Greenland, highlighting growing concerns over the United States’ increasingly assertive stance. The MP expressed apprehension about what he described as the US hinting at military options, while emphasizing Denmark’s preference for cooperation and understanding over threats.
Rasmus Jarlov, Chairman of the Danish Parliament’s Defense Committee, described the current situation as “very worrying” for both Denmark and Greenland. He stated that the American discussion of potential military intervention is a serious development that must be addressed with caution and preparedness. He believes this scenario is something “we must be aware of and prepare for,” acknowledging the challenges posed by the ongoing dispute.
The Danish MP stressed that Copenhagen does not want to engage in military confrontation with Washington, cautioning against the potentially “catastrophic consequences” should the disagreement escalate into a direct clash. He emphasized that Denmark does not wish to find itself in a position where it is “fighting with the United States,” asserting that constructive cooperation is the preferred path forward.
In this context, Jarlov explained that Denmark seeks to reach an agreement with the United States rather than remain under the pressure of repeated threats, viewing dialogue as the most effective way to address existing disputes. Regarding strengthening the Danish military presence related to Greenland, Jarlov acknowledged existing disagreements with the United States, noting the imbalance of power.
The Chairman of the Danish Parliament’s Defense Committee admitted that the American side is “militarily stronger,” but this acknowledgment does not negate the need for preparedness and careful handling of the situation. The US has previously suggested taking control of Greenland, citing the island’s importance to its air and missile defense systems.
DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation.
