Algeria Accelerates Digital Transformation in Primary Education

Algiers – The Algerian Ministry of National Education is embarking on an ambitious plan to equip primary schools nationwide with electronic tablets before the end of the year. This initiative signals a significant step towards modernizing the educational system and embracing digital transformation, according to officials.

Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Sadawi, announced the rollout during a parliamentary session, emphasizing that the project aligns with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Substantial financial resources have been allocated to ensure the successful and timely implementation of this nationwide program.

The initial phase of the program will focus on students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The electronic tablets are intended to replace traditional textbooks, thereby alleviating the burden of heavy schoolbags and promoting student well-being. The ministry clarified that the tablets will primarily serve as digital textbooks and will not be used for completing exercises or classroom activities.

Currently, approximately 18 percent of primary schools have already been equipped with these tablets. Expanding the program requires careful planning and preparation, including comprehensive teacher training on the effective use of the new technology. Furthermore, schools must establish secure storage facilities for the tablets and ensure ongoing technical support and maintenance.

The Ministry is also committed to integrating all educational institutions under its supervision into the digital landscape. This effort aims to streamline administrative processes, improve the management of employee careers through the use of unique identification numbers, and enhance overall efficiency.

Minister Sadawi reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to constructing new educational facilities to meet the growing demand for schooling. He acknowledged that providing adequate infrastructure remains a key challenge, requiring significant financial investment.
