The Canadian government announced Thursday the death of a Canadian citizen in Iran, allegedly at the hands of Iranian authorities. The incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing public protests that have gripped the nation for approximately three weeks.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that she was aware of the death of a Canadian citizen, attributing it to the actions of Iranian authorities. In a statement, Minister Anand emphasized that “the peaceful protests of the Iranian people, demanding to be heard in the face of the Iranian regime’s repression and ongoing human rights violations, have led the regime to blatantly disregard human life.”
Anand affirmed that Canada “strongly condemns the Iranian regime’s violence” and demands “its immediate cessation.” She expressed condolences to the victim’s family during this “difficult time.”
A source within the Canadian Foreign Ministry indicated that authorities believe the Canadian citizen was killed by Iranian security forces during a demonstration. Consular officials are reportedly in direct contact with the victim’s family in Canada, providing necessary support.
In a separate statement, Global Affairs Canada urged all Canadians in Iran to “leave the country immediately if they can do so safely.” The estimated number of Canadian citizens residing in Iran is approximately 3,000.
These developments unfold amidst escalating public protests within Iran. The demonstrations initially erupted in late December 2025, sparked by the devaluation of the local currency and a worsening economic crisis. Starting in Tehran, the protests quickly spread to numerous cities and provinces.
