Algeria Reaffirms Support for South Sudan Peace Process

Juba, South Sudan – Algeria has reiterated its unwavering support for the ongoing peace process in South Sudan. This commitment was underscored during a high-level African Union (AU) mission to Juba, where Algerian State Secretary in charge of the National Community Abroad, Soughane Chiheb, participated in crucial discussions aimed at fostering stability in the young nation.

The visit, which took place on January 14th and 15th, 2026, forms part of the AU’s broader efforts to monitor the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), signed in 2018. The focus remains on supporting South Sudan through its sensitive transitional phase and preparations for its first general elections since gaining independence.

The Algerian delegation, along with other members of the AU High-Level Committee on South Sudan (C5), engaged in extensive consultations with key stakeholders. These included a meeting with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit, as well as in-depth talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other officials from the Transitional Government of National Unity.

Discussions also involved representatives from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC). The delegation further met with officials from the National Constitutional Review Commission, the National Elections Commission, the Council of Political Parties, and representatives from civil society organizations.

The Algerian State Secretary emphasized Algeria’s steadfast commitment to South Sudan’s sovereignty and stability throughout the visit. This reaffirmation comes ahead of anticipated discussions on South Sudan at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in February 2026. Algeria’s continued engagement underscores its dedication to supporting peace and development across the African continent.
