Algeria is set to share its extensive energy expertise with Somalia, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. The announcement follows a high-level meeting in Algiers between Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of Oil and Mines, and a delegation from the Federal Republic of Somalia, led by Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir Mohamed, Minister of Education and Higher Education and Special Envoy of the Somali President.
The meeting, also attended by Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Mohamed Omar, and the Somali Ambassador to Algeria, focused on bolstering cooperation in the hydrocarbon and mining sectors. This initiative builds upon the agreements signed during the Somali President’s official visit to Algeria in November 2025.
Discussions centered on enhancing partnerships and investments across the entire hydrocarbon value chain, encompassing exploration, production, transportation, refining, and petrochemicals. The potential for collaboration between Sonatrach, Algeria’s national oil company, and Somali institutions was also explored.
A key aspect of the cooperation involves capacity building and training. Algeria has offered to leverage the expertise of the Algerian Petroleum Institute to provide training programs for Somali professionals. This includes sharing Algeria’s experience in oil and gas industry regulations and legal frameworks.
Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment, in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives, to strengthening cooperation with Somalia, particularly within the framework of South-South cooperation and with fellow African nations. He reiterated Algeria’s readiness to support Somalia’s efforts in developing its energy sector.
This partnership underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering development and cooperation within the African continent, leveraging its own resources and expertise to support the growth of its neighbors.
The meeting also highlighted the historical and fraternal ties between Algeria and Somalia, paving the way for deeper collaboration in various sectors beyond energy.
