Algiers, Algeria – The first qualifying round of the third Algerian Mathematics Olympiad, officially designated for the year 2026, commenced today. The event was inaugurated by the Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui, at the Brothers Omrani Middle School in Algiers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Saadaoui highlighted the impressive participation figures for this year’s Olympiad. A total of 284,307 students are competing in the third edition, spread across 1,003 centers throughout the country. This significant level of participation underscores the growing interest and enthusiasm for mathematics among Algerian students.
The Algerian Mathematics Olympiad aims to identify and nurture talented young mathematicians, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and compete at a national level. The competition also serves to promote the importance of mathematics education and encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The Olympiad is structured in several stages, beginning with these initial qualifying rounds. Successful participants will advance to subsequent rounds, culminating in a final competition to determine the national champions. These champions will then have the opportunity to represent Algeria in international mathematics competitions.
The Ministry of National Education views the Mathematics Olympiad as a crucial component of its broader strategy to enhance the quality of education and promote excellence in all academic disciplines. The ministry is committed to providing the necessary resources and support to ensure the success of the Olympiad and to foster a culture of mathematical thinking among Algerian youth. The start of this year’s competition marks an important step in achieving these goals.
