Algeria Launches Ambitious Campaign to Plant 5 Million Trees

Algiers, January 17, 2026 – The Algerian government is set to embark on a major national campaign next month with the ambitious goal of planting five million trees. The announcement was made by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Oualid, during the opening ceremony of the 39th annual session of the National Council of Algerian Muslim Scouts in Algiers.

Minister Oualid, speaking alongside the Minister of Youth, Mustapha Hidaoui, stated, “We will launch a very large campaign in February to plant trees.” He emphasized the campaign’s ambitious scope: “Our goal is to plant five million trees in just 24 hours.”

Acknowledging the scale of the undertaking, the Minister expressed confidence in the Algerian people’s ability to achieve this target. “While this goal may seem ambitious,” he explained, “past experience has proven that when Algerians engage in a national objective, these numbers become easily achievable.”

Minister Oualid referenced a previous successful afforestation effort, stating, “Initially, the goal was to plant one million trees in cooperation with the ‘Green Algeria’ association and its president, Fouad Maala. However, we ultimately managed to plant 1.41 million trees.”

He attributed the success of the prior campaign to the collective effort of Algerian society. “This achievement was made possible thanks to the cooperation of all segments of Algerian society. Algerians responded to the call, and there was a very strong presence of the Algerian Muslim Scouts across various provinces,” he concluded, highlighting the importance of public participation in achieving national environmental goals.
