Royal Calls on France to Apologize for Colonial Crimes in Algeria

Algiers – Ségolène Royal, the new President of the France-Algeria Association, has reiterated the need for France to confront its colonial past in Algeria. She urged Paris to issue a formal apology for the crimes committed during the colonial era and to work towards rectifying the resulting damages.

Royal emphasized that acknowledging these historical truths is a non-negotiable right. Speaking at the annual meetings of the Institute for International and Strategic Relations in her first appearance as President of the Association, she firmly rejected what she described as the French concept of “memory rent-seeking.” She argued that this concept is a means of stripping victims of history of their right to speak and be recognized.

“The memory associated with colonial violence is not a political tool,” Royal stated, “but a right to acknowledge documented and established facts.” She further asserted that certain wounds and crimes of French colonialism in Algeria have not yet been fully acknowledged, redressed, or formally apologized for. She emphasized the need for France to follow the example of other nations that have confronted their colonial pasts.

Royal believes that such a step is essential to overcoming historical disputes and rebuilding trust between the two countries. She clarified that her position does not imply a rejection of relations with Morocco or any other partner. Instead, she seeks to foster a renewed cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean, involving citizens, actors, and officials, moving beyond denial or the political manipulation of history. This approach, she argues, will strengthen mutual understanding and safeguard shared memory. The France-Algeria Association aims to play a key role in facilitating this renewed relationship.
