Algerian Architect to Lead African Urban & Environmental Policy

In a significant development for Algeria’s architectural community, Hassan Malikiya, President of the National Council of Architects of Algeria, has been appointed head of the Housing and Environment Committee of the African Union of Architects (AUA). The appointment occurred during the regional conference for North Africa.

The conference, which included key AUA leaders, was held to implement resolutions from the AUA General Assembly held in Kinshasa, Congo, last July. The primary focus was electing a Vice President for the North African region, comprising Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and Mauritania. Libya was notably absent from the proceedings.

The gathering was attended by the AUA President, Secretary-General, six board members, and the outgoing president. The electoral process resulted in the selection of Dr. Iman Abdel Gawad as Vice President for North Africa. Simultaneously, the Algerian, Hassan Malikiya, was appointed to lead the Union’s Housing and Environment Committee.

This selection reflects the African Union of Architects’ appreciation for Algerian expertise in urban planning and environmental matters. It also demonstrates confidence in Malikiya’s ability to contribute to shaping shared visions that enhance sustainable housing and environmental policies across the continent and support regional cooperation in the architectural field.

The appointment highlights Algeria’s growing influence in regional policy.

In a parallel move to strengthen its professional presence in the Arab world, Algeria officially joined the Arab Architects Organization during an executive meeting held on June 14, 2025, at the headquarters of the Arab Engineers Union in Cairo. The Algerian membership file was presented and unanimously approved, reflecting the esteem held for Algerian engineering skills within the Arab professional sphere.

The Arab body aims to support the profession and unify its standards across the Arab world.
