Algiers – A controversial incident involving Prince Moulay Rachid, brother of the King of Morocco, at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy presentation ceremony has ignited a wave of criticism. The Prince’s actions, witnessed during the crowning of the Senegalese national team, have been interpreted as a deliberate snub and a display of arrogance.
The incident unfolded as CAF President Patrice Motsepe, accompanied by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, prepared to hand over the trophy. Motsepe reportedly gestured for Prince Moulay Rachid to join them in presenting the cup to the Senegalese players, a customary gesture in such events. However, the Prince allegedly refused, reportedly signaling his dissent with hand gestures and head movements, clearly visible on live television.
Sources indicate Motsepe’s intention was to have a representative of the Moroccan royal family participate in the presentation as a matter of protocol and respect for the occasion. The Prince’s apparent reluctance forced Motsepe and Infantino to proceed without him, creating an awkward moment for the players and spectators. Later, the Prince briefly touched the trophy as it was being handed to Sadio Mane, a gesture seen by many as insincere and insufficient to undo his initial refusal.
Critics argue that the Prince’s behavior reflects a deep-seated unwillingness to accept defeat and a disregard for the Senegalese team’s victory. They suggest that instead of honoring the sporting achievement, the Prince chose to publicly express his displeasure, turning the prestigious award ceremony into a platform for perceived resentment.
The incident has generated significant discussion about sportsmanship, protocol, and the importance of respecting the outcome of competitions, regardless of national rivalries. The actions of the Moroccan Prince have cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of pure celebration for the victorious Senegalese team.
