January 20, 2026 – Civil Protection units across several Algerian provinces have been actively responding to the impact of recent severe weather, according to the Directorate General of Civil Protection. Operations are ongoing as of midday today.
In Relizane province, authorities recovered the body of an individual approximately 300 meters from the banks of Oued Safa, a river experiencing elevated water levels. Flooding in the area resulted in water damage to 50 homes in the Satal neighborhood. Civil Protection teams in Relizane also worked to drain accumulated rainwater from several neighborhoods, including El Bermadia, Chadli, Hamou, El Toub, Dellache, and El Intissar. Additionally, they extracted a vehicle with two occupants in good health that was trapped in floodwaters in the Ziraaiya-Kantara El Hamra district.
In Chlef province, specifically in the municipality of Boukadir, Civil Protection personnel rescued two families, comprising a total of 10 individuals, who were trapped inside their residences. They also pumped out floodwater from 11 homes in the El Zawia neighborhood and 10 homes in the Mansoub Oued Boukhendak area of Telassa.
Units in Tiaret province focused on draining rainwater from three residences in the New Stadium neighborhood, six apartment building entrances in the Mohamed Djahlan neighborhood, and the area in front of a home in the Ibn Badis neighborhood. Similar operations were conducted at apartment building entrances in the Lakadat neighborhood and in front of a chicken farm warehouse on the Bouchkif road.
In Medea province, Civil Protection teams addressed flooding in two homes in the Ain El Kebir and El Hadj Hamdi neighborhoods. Authorities also reported the collapse of an exterior wall of a house in the Naim area, but confirmed that no injuries were sustained.
The Civil Protection continues to monitor the situation closely and respond to incidents as they arise.
