Trump Claims Greenland as ‘American Land,’ Sparks EU Tension

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited controversy by publicly declaring Greenland as ‘American Land.’ In a post on his Truth Social platform Tuesday, Trump shared an image depicting Greenland with a sign reading ‘Greenland… American Land… Established 2026.’ The image featured Trump holding an American flag, with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the background.

Trump also posted a message purportedly from French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing agreement on Syria but questioning Trump’s stance on Greenland. The message, as shared by Trump, included a suggestion from Macron to hold a G7 summit in Paris following the Davos summit, potentially inviting Ukraine, Syria, Denmark, and Russia. Macron also extended an invitation for dinner in Paris prior to Trump’s return to the United States.

These pronouncements have further strained relations with Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged a ‘firm’ response to Trump’s repeated threats regarding Greenland and potential tariff increases. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, she emphasized the importance of the U.S. as an ally and friend, warning that escalating tensions would only benefit adversaries. She affirmed the EU’s commitment to working with the U.S. on ‘strengthening security in the Arctic,’ highlighting significant European investment plans in Greenland, which she stated were in their ‘common interest.’

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, following a meeting in Washington, acknowledged that fundamental disagreements persist and that the ‘United States’ desire to control Greenland is clear.’ Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told DZWatch that Finland stands ‘firmly’ alongside the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.

The renewed focus on Greenland’s status raises questions about the future of transatlantic relations and the geopolitical dynamics in the Arctic region. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing story.
