Syria and Iraq Discuss Border Security, Reopening Crossings

President Ahmed al-Share of Syria and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani held discussions Tuesday focusing on border security, the reopening of border crossings, and the ongoing fight against remnants of the Islamic State group. The conversation took place via telephone, according to statements released by the Syrian Presidency and the Iraqi Prime Minister’s media office.

The Syrian Presidency stated that President al-Share and Prime Minister al-Sudani addressed regional developments, particularly in northeastern Syria. Both parties emphasized the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. They also stressed the need to strengthen control over the Syrian-Iraqi border and intensify joint efforts to maintain security and stability in the region.

According to the Syrian statement, both leaders agreed to reactivate border crossings. They further emphasized the need to enhance joint security coordination and cooperation in confronting terrorist organizations, with a particular focus on the Islamic State group.

The Iraqi Prime Minister’s media office reported that the call addressed the evolving situation in Syria and the security challenges the country faces. Prime Minister al-Sudani affirmed Iraq’s commitment to preserving Syria’s security and stability. He also underscored the importance of dialogue in resolving crises, ensuring the rights of all components of the Syrian people, and safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The call between the two leaders coincided with an announcement from the Syrian government regarding a new understanding with the QSD organization. This understanding establishes mechanisms for large-scale military, administrative, and political integration, with implementation reportedly beginning Tuesday evening. This follows a ceasefire agreement signed Sunday between President al-Share and the QSD, aimed at integrating its members into the government.

Key provisions of the agreement include integrating the administration responsible for Islamic State prisoners and camps, along with the forces protecting these facilities, into the Syrian government. This would give the Syrian government full legal and security responsibility for these entities.
