Trump’s First Year: NYT Fact-Checks Claims on Economy, Immigration

President Donald Trump, during his first year of his second term, has repeatedly used misleading statements and outright falsehoods to bolster his claims of success in areas such as the economy, immigration, and executive power, according to a detailed analysis.

The central argument made by President Trump – that he has engineered a dramatic turnaround for the nation – is often based on inaccurate exaggerations, the analysis contends. For example, Trump has asserted that his predecessor, John Biden, presided over the “worst inflation” in history, while he himself is now overseeing the “best numbers” ever seen.

The analysis examined several key claims made by President Trump during his first year, focusing on their accuracy and context.

Immigration: Inflated Figures

President Trump has claimed that the Biden administration facilitated the entry of approximately 25 million individuals into the United States through irregular channels. The analysis argues that Trump has significantly overestimated the number of irregular migrants who entered during Biden’s term and has misrepresented most migrants as criminals. In reality, the analysis indicates, most migrants deported during Trump’s first year had no criminal convictions.

The figure of 25 million also far exceeds most credible estimates of irregular immigration under the Biden administration, even surpassing Trump’s own estimate of 21 million from July. A report estimated that between 11.5 million and 12.5 million migrants, both legal and irregular, settled in the United States under the Biden administration.

Economy: Inaccurate Comparisons

Trump frequently states that America experienced the “worst numbers” under President Biden and that the country has now transitioned to the “best numbers” ever under his leadership. The analysis refutes this claim.
