Trump, Erdogan Hold ‘Very Good’ Talks on Syria, Regional Issues

President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation Tuesday evening, described by Trump as “very good.” The discussion centered on several key issues, including the ongoing situation in Syria and counter-terrorism efforts.

Speaking to reporters before departing the White House for the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Trump offered few details but emphasized the positive nature of the call with Erdogan.

According to the Turkish Presidency, the two leaders discussed the latest regional and international developments, in addition to bilateral relations between the United States and Turkey. The Syrian conflict was a prominent topic, with both presidents exchanging views on the evolving situation.

Counter-terrorism Efforts Highlighted

Trump and Erdogan also addressed the fight against ISIS, specifically focusing on the issue of ISIS fighters held in Syrian prisons. Erdogan reportedly assured Trump that Turkey is closely monitoring developments in Syria and reiterated the importance of the country’s unity and territorial integrity to Turkey.

“A prosperous, terror-free, and peaceful Syria will contribute to strengthening the stability of the region,” Erdogan stated, according to a statement released by the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications.

Gaza Peace Efforts Discussed

The conversation also touched upon the situation in Gaza. Erdogan conveyed that efforts to achieve peace are ongoing and that Turkey will continue to coordinate with the United States on this matter. He also expressed his gratitude to Trump for the invitation to participate in the peace council concerning the Gaza Strip.
