Algeria’s Handball Team Eyes World Cup 2027 After Strong African Start

The Algerian national handball team has commenced its campaign at the African Nations Championship with high ambitions, setting its sights on qualifying for the 2027 World Championship. The team began its journey against Nigeria in the opening match of Group A, aiming to send a strong message to its competitors about Algeria’s potential in this continental tournament.

Head coach Saleh Bouchkriou is relying on a balanced squad that combines experienced players with promising young talents. The roster includes seasoned veterans with significant experience in African competitions, alongside emerging players who have showcased their abilities during the preparation period. This blend provides the team with diverse solutions, both physically and tactically.

The primary objective for Algeria in this championship extends beyond simply securing a good start. The team aspires to reach the podium, a crucial requirement for securing a spot in the 2027 World Championship in Germany. The team draws confidence from its strong performance in the 2024 edition held in Egypt, where they reached the final before losing to the Egyptian national team.

Bouchkriou has emphasized that the current team has been prepared to compete against the strongest African nations. He stressed that the ambition this time is to achieve a result better than second place and to vigorously defend the reputation of Algerian handball.

The coaching staff recognizes the importance of winning the opening match. A convincing victory against Nigeria is expected to boost morale before facing the host nation, Rwanda, followed by a final group stage match against Zambia. This initial phase is seen as crucial for confidently advancing to the knockout stages.

The national team began its preparations in November with several training camps within Algeria. This was followed by a European tour that included friendly matches against strong teams, allowing the coach to assess player readiness and correct any weaknesses, particularly in offensive efficiency. The African Nations Championship promises intense competition, and Algeria is determined to make its mark.
