Mascaras, Algeria – The Oued El-Tahat dam in the Mascaras province has reached its full capacity, according to the National Agency for Dams and Transfers. Officials announced the dam is now at 100% capacity, with overflow operations ongoing.
In a statement released Wednesday, the agency specified that the volume of water discharged through the spillway (EVC) has exceeded 11 million cubic meters. This substantial volume of water flows directly into the Mina River, which, in turn, supplies the Sidi M’hamed Benouda dam in the Relizane province.
Authorities have capitalized on this overflow event by opening the bottom outlets of the dam. This allows for the removal of accumulated silt and sediment, ensuring the dam’s continued operational efficiency and longevity. The process is a routine maintenance procedure designed to prevent the buildup of debris that can compromise the dam’s functionality.
The full capacity of the Oued El-Tahat dam is a positive development for the region, securing water resources for agricultural and domestic use. The strategic management of the dam’s water levels, including the controlled release of excess water, is crucial for preventing potential flooding and ensuring the sustainable use of this vital resource. This event highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring and maintenance of Algeria’s dam infrastructure.
