AL-WADI, Algeria – Law enforcement in Al-Wadi province have seized a substantial quantity of foreign cigarettes smuggled into the country, resulting in the arrest of one suspect. The operation, conducted by the Mobile Judicial Police Unit of Guemar, led to the confiscation of approximately 68,000 packs of cigarettes.
According to a statement released by the Al-Wadi police, the smuggled cigarettes were discovered concealed within a truck transporting peanuts, cleverly masking the illegal cargo. The truck itself was also impounded as part of the operation. Authorities believe the cigarettes were destined for a northern province within Algeria.
“This operation underscores our commitment to combating smuggling and protecting the national economy,” stated a police spokesperson. “We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt these illegal networks and bring those involved to justice.”
The arrested individual has been presented before the Public Prosecutor at the Guemar court. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the smuggling operation and identify any other individuals involved.
The seizure represents a significant blow to the illegal cigarette trade in the region and highlights the ongoing efforts of Algerian law enforcement to curb cross-border smuggling activities. This is a developing story, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.
