Petkovic’s Future: FAF to Offer Contract Renewal in March

Algiers – The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is reportedly planning to offer national team coach Vladimir Petkovic a contract renewal during the March international break. Despite initial enthusiasm from FAF President Walid Sadi to extend Petkovic’s tenure after his first six months, negotiations have been delayed.

Sources close to the national team indicate that the FAF will re-engage with Petkovic’s representatives, and possibly the coach himself, to discuss the renewal. The federation aims to finalize the agreement swiftly, well in advance of the crucial stages leading up to the World Cup qualifiers, allowing ample time for preparation and focus.

According to these sources, Sadi has been pushing for a resolution since Algeria’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), seeking either a renewal or a termination of the relationship. The FAF president is keen to hold a final meeting before the March camp, presenting his offer to Petkovic and hoping for his acceptance.

While details remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that the new contract will not be long-term, potentially mirroring the current agreement of two to two-and-a-half years. Furthermore, it is expected to include specific performance-based objectives. The FAF is keen to avoid repeating past experiences, where contracts lacked clear targets.

Discussions about objectives for the upcoming AFCON are likely to center around a strong performance. Petkovic had previously resisted signing a contract that mandated a deep run in the Morocco AFCON, insisting only on progressing to the second round. He argued that, given the team’s recent failures to reach the knockout stages, aiming for the title immediately was unrealistic. However, expectations will be higher in future tournaments, with a semi-final appearance potentially considered a minimum target.

The renewal is not yet guaranteed. The outcome hinges on the upcoming negotiations and the alignment of perspectives between Sadi and Petkovic.
