Trump Vows to Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated yesterday that he hopes further military action against Iran will not be necessary. However, he firmly asserted that the United States will take action if Tehran resumes its nuclear program.

Speaking during an interview on CNBC at the World Economic Forum, Trump emphasized that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.” He added, “We will be revealing where they stand now regarding their nuclear program. They cannot continue this program, and it must stop completely.”

Trump claimed that Iran ceased its crackdown on protesters after he warned them last week about potential military consequences. He stated, “They were going to hang 837 people on Thursday. I told them, ‘You cannot do that’.” He further added, “Hopefully, there will be no further action. They were shooting people randomly in the streets.” However, he also reiterated that he would not rule out further action if the situation warrants it.

In June of last year, Trump launched an offensive targeting sites linked to the Iranian nuclear program and later considered additional strikes amid escalating tensions and following internal protests in Iran since late December 2025.

Meanwhile, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi stated on Tuesday that the standoff with Iran regarding its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the inspection of nuclear facilities that were bombed by the United States and Israel “should not last forever.”

In an interview with Reuters at the Davos Forum, Grossi explained that the IAEA has inspected all 13 Iranian nuclear facilities that were not attacked. However, it has been unable to inspect any of the three main sites that were targeted in June: Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. The Director General added that Iran must provide the IAEA with a detailed report on what happened at those sites and the materials present, including an estimated 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, a level nearing weapons-grade.
