President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has emphasized the critical role of the Constitutional Court in solidifying the rule of law and enhancing constitutional justice in Algeria. His remarks were delivered on his behalf by the President of the Constitutional Court, Laila Aslaoui, to participants at the 19th session of the Executive Bureau of the Conference of African Constitutional Courts and Councils, held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center.
President Tebboune stated that the meeting takes place within a significant national context, marked by the 2022 constitutional amendment. He described this amendment as a pivotal moment in Algeria’s political and institutional reforms. It established, for the first time in Algerian history, a Constitutional Court, reflecting the political will to promote constitutional justice and reinforce the rule of law.
The President further explained that this qualitative shift has contributed to strengthening the independence of the judiciary and solidifying the principle of separation of powers. It has also directed constitutional oversight mechanisms to enhance the system of protecting rights, freedoms, and constitutional guarantees for citizens.
President Tebboune also acknowledged the ongoing role of the Constitutional Court in spreading constitutional awareness, considering it a fundamental pillar for building the rule of law. He stressed the importance of intensifying training and awareness efforts, and fostering openness with various institutions and components of society.
Furthermore, the President highlighted the symbolism of choosing Algeria as the headquarters for the Conference of African Constitutional Courts and Councils. He stated that this reflects confidence in Algeria and its firm commitment to supporting constitutional judicial work at the continental level.
President Tebboune concluded by noting that Algeria’s hosting of the 19th session aligns with its central role in hosting major African events, such as the Intra-African Trade Fair and the African Conference on Emerging Enterprises, both of which are essential pillars for driving economic growth and encouraging innovation. Algeria’s commitment to these initiatives underscores its dedication to fostering a strong and just society.
