President Tebboune Lauds Judicial Independence at African Conference

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has praised the independence of the judiciary in Algeria, highlighting the significant reforms undertaken in recent years. His remarks were delivered on his behalf by the President of the Constitutional Court, Laila Aslaoui, during the 19th session of the Executive Bureau of the Conference of African Constitutional Courts and Councils, held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center.

President Tebboune emphasized that the meeting takes place within a distinctive national context, marked by the 2022 constitutional amendment. He described this amendment as a pivotal moment in the path of political and institutional reforms, establishing for the first time in Algeria’s history a Constitutional Court. This, he stated, embodies a clear commitment to promoting constitutional justice and strengthening the rule of law.

The President affirmed that this qualitative shift has contributed to reinforcing judicial independence, solidifying the separation of powers, and strengthening the system of protecting rights, freedoms, and constitutional guarantees for citizens. He also commended the ongoing efforts of the Constitutional Court in disseminating constitutional culture, considering it a fundamental element in building a state of law, promoting citizenship, education, awareness, and openness to institutions and society.

Furthermore, Tebboune noted that Algeria’s selection as the venue for the conference carries deep symbolism and reflects the country’s commitment to supporting African constitutional judicial work. Hosting the 19th session also aligns with Algeria’s role in organizing important continental events, such as the Intra-African Trade Fair and the African Conference on Emerging Institutions, which are essential pillars for achieving economic growth and innovation on the continent.

The President’s message underscores Algeria’s commitment to judicial reform and its growing role as a key player in promoting good governance and economic development across Africa. This conference serves as a vital platform for exchanging ideas and best practices in constitutional law and judicial independence.
