King Addresses Nation After AFCON Final Controversy

Following a tense Africa Cup of Nations final, King Mohammed VI addressed the nation, emphasizing the enduring bonds of brotherhood between Morocco and the African continent. The King’s statement, released by the Royal Palace on Thursday, sought to reassure the public that the events surrounding the match between Morocco and Senegal would not undermine the strong relationships built over centuries.

The statement acknowledged the unfortunate incidents that occurred during the final minutes of the game. However, it expressed confidence that once emotions subside, the spirit of African fraternity would naturally prevail. The King affirmed that Morocco’s success is intrinsically linked to the success of Africa as a whole.

Addressing what the statement described as defamation and attempts to undermine credibility, King Mohammed VI reiterated his belief that hostile agendas would not succeed. He expressed faith in the Moroccan people’s ability to discern truth and resist succumbing to animosity and division.

“The Kingdom of Morocco has been and will always remain a great African nation, faithful to the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity, and respect that it has always dedicated to its continent,” the statement declared. It further emphasized Morocco’s unwavering commitment to a unified and prosperous Africa, particularly through the sharing of expertise and skills.

The Royal Palace’s statement follows a highly charged final match that saw Senegal defeat Morocco 1-0 in extra time. The game was marred by protests, pitch invasions, and clashes with security forces, leading to arrests in Rabat. These incidents prompted calls for calm and reconciliation.

The King’s address aims to defuse tensions and reaffirm Morocco’s dedication to its role as a leading African nation.

The Moroccan government has not released any further information regarding the arrests.
