TINDOUF – The exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine is poised to significantly transform the economic and social landscape of southwestern Algeria and the country as a whole. This was highlighted by the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Sayoud, during a visit to the Gara Djebilet region in Tindouf province on Friday.
Minister Sayoud emphasized that Algeria, under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has actively commenced the utilization of its mineral resources. He stated that the Gara Djebilet project has entered its operational phase in record time.
Speaking to the media, accompanied by a high-level ministerial delegation including the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djeloui, Sayoud indicated that the exploitation of the phosphate mine in Bled El Hadba, eastern Algeria, will follow, as part of a comprehensive national vision aimed at diversifying the national economy and reducing dependence on hydrocarbons.
He pointed out the rapid progress made, anticipating the near completion of the mining line. The minister added that connecting the Gara Djebilet mine to the national railway network will facilitate the transportation of iron ore from the far southwest to Oran and other regions of the country.
Sayoud expressed pride in the construction of a railway line spanning nearly 940 kilometers in less than two years. He described the mine’s exploitation as a long-awaited dream for Algerians, now a reality due to the state’s active involvement and reliance on Algerian expertise and companies, both in terms of human resources and material capabilities.
The Minister commended the crucial role played by national executives and Algerian youth in realizing these strategic projects, asserting that the achievements will unlock new opportunities for a diversified economy. The ministerial delegation began its field visit to Tindouf province by inspecting the train station in the provincial capital, receiving detailed explanations about the facilities available to passengers, before embarking on a trial train journey from Tindouf.
