A high-level ministerial delegation conducted a working visit to Bechar today to assess the final preparations for the launch of the strategic Western Mining Line, connecting Bechar, Tindouf, and Gara Djebilet. This initiative is considered crucial for strengthening the national economy and maximizing the value of mineral resources.
The delegation included the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation, accompanied by the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, and the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure. The Minister of Tourism and Traditional Industries, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons in charge of Mines, the Director-General of National Security, and the Director-General of Civil Protection were also part of the visiting party.
The primary objective of the visit was to evaluate the readiness of the logistical and railway infrastructure, inspect the basic facilities associated with the mining route, and coordinate efforts between the relevant sectors. This is to ensure a safe and efficient start to this strategic project, which links the southwest to mineral production areas.
The activation of the mining line is expected to accelerate the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet mine and create a developmental dynamic in the region. This will be achieved by providing direct and indirect employment opportunities, improving the transportation of raw materials, and supporting iron-related manufacturing industries.
Members of the delegation emphasized the importance of security preparedness and safety measures. They also stressed the need for local authorities to provide support to ensure the project proceeds according to the approved timelines and standards, thereby reinforcing the economic and social dimensions of this national achievement. The government hopes the project will be fully operational by 2026. This project is a cornerstone of Algeria’s economic diversification strategy.
