Government Delegation Inspects Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Shipment

Tindouf, January 23, 2026 – A high-level government delegation conducted an inspection today at the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine in Tindouf, ahead of the first shipment of iron ore extracted from the site.

The delegation included Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport Said Sayoud, Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure Abdelkader Djeloui, Minister of Tourism Houria Madahi, and Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines in charge of Mines, Karima Bekir Tafer. Director General of National Security Ali Badaoui, and Director General of Civil Protection Boualem Boughlaf, were also present.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the logistical preparations for the loading and transport of the iron ore via rail to processing facilities in the north of the country. The delegation examined the loading procedures and transport infrastructure to ensure a smooth and efficient operation.

Following the inspection of the loading site, the delegation toured the Gara Djebilet mine itself, where they observed the accelerated pace of extraction operations. The increased activity is aimed at building up sufficient stockpiles of iron ore to facilitate continuous transport along the newly constructed mining railway line.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, the visit was crucial to evaluate the readiness of the western mining railway line for the commencement of iron ore transport from the Gara Djebilet mine to northern destinations. This marks a significant step in Algeria’s efforts to develop its mining sector and reduce reliance on imports. The Gara Djebilet project is a key component of the government’s strategy to diversify the national economy and create new opportunities for growth.
