Africa Ends Public Health Emergency for Mpox

The African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a body of the African Union, has announced the lifting of the continental public health emergency declared for Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox). This decision follows a significant decline in the number of reported cases and fatalities across the continent.

In an official statement, the Africa CDC emphasized that the decision was based on sustained improvements in epidemiological indicators. These improvements reflect intensified health response efforts, strengthened early detection capabilities, improved clinical management, and enhanced coordination among member states. The continent has transitioned from an emergency response phase to a path of sustainable disease control.

African health authorities assert that lifting the emergency status does not signal complacency. Instead, it represents a strategic shift towards long-term management, characterized by robust epidemiological surveillance, support for public health systems, and the rapid and transparent exchange of information to prepare for any potential setbacks.

This development is viewed as a positive step, demonstrating the increasing maturity of Africa’s health response and its capacity to confront cross-border epidemics. Health experts underscore the continued need for awareness campaigns and improved national preparedness, particularly in regions previously identified as hotspots. According to health officials, this decision affirms that Africa is better equipped to address health challenges within a comprehensive vision aimed at protecting citizens and strengthening continental health security. Continued vigilance and investment in public health infrastructure remain crucial.

The Africa CDC will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide guidance to member states as needed. The focus now shifts to integrating Mpox control into routine health services and strengthening overall health system resilience.
