The National Social Insurance Fund for Salaried Workers (CNAS) has begun distributing free electronic drug cards to socially uninsured and needy individuals this week. This initiative aims to strengthen healthcare provisions for vulnerable populations across Algeria.
CNAS Director of Benefits, Abdelhafid Djaghri, confirmed the program’s active implementation. He stated that over 150 electronic cards have already been issued, with the distribution process continuing to reach all eligible beneficiaries.
The card grants access to approximately 5,500 medications free of charge, available through a network of over 13,000 pharmacies nationwide that have agreements with the CNAS. This benefit extends to the uninsured individuals and their dependent minor children.
Eligible individuals are being contacted and invited to visit their local social security agencies to collect their electronic cards as they become available.
Djaghri emphasized that the electronic card is specifically designed for individuals with no income and lacking social security coverage, including those with chronic illnesses, as well as their dependent minor children. This initiative aligns with Executive Decree No. 24-287, dated August 22, 2024, which outlines the mechanisms for providing medical care to this specific demographic.
The application process involves collaboration between the national solidarity and social security sectors. An administrative and medical file is submitted to the social affairs department in the applicant’s municipality of residence. This file is then forwarded to a specialized provincial committee for review and decision-making. Approved applications are then sent to the CNAS for card preparation and distribution to the beneficiaries. This initiative is expected to alleviate the health and financial burdens on vulnerable populations.
