French Debate Erupts Over Mbappe & Zidane’s Algeria Choice

Algiers – The potential selection of Ethan Mbappe, brother of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, and Elyaz Zidane, son of legend Zinedine Zidane, for the Algerian national team, Les Fennecs, has ignited a heated debate in France. The controversy is particularly intense as the international break in March approaches.

French media outlets have been rife with discussion. One radio host on RTL France went so far as to call the possibility of Ethan Mbappe playing for Algeria a “national issue.” The host expressed astonishment that the brother of one of France’s leading players would consider representing another nation, questioning the uproar such a decision would cause, given the Mbappe family’s prominent status in French football.

While the radio personality seemed to demonstrate more understanding regarding the Zidane sons’ potential decision, bluntly stating their chances of playing for the French national team were “virtually non-existent,” he viewed Ethan Mbappe’s situation differently. He argued that “the door to the French national team remains open to him in the long term.” The host pointed out that Luca Zidane, Elyaz’s older brother, had previously joined the Algerian national team as a goalkeeper, and that Elyaz was following a similar path.

According to available statistics, Ethan Mbappe has played in 15 matches for Lille this season, scoring 3 goals and providing 1 assist, reflecting a level of performance that arguably qualifies him for international play. Elyaz Zidane, however, has played 8 matches for Real Betis B in the Spanish third division without scoring. This partly explains the French host’s assessment of his chances with the French national team.

The debate highlights the sensitive issue of sporting identity for players with dual heritage, especially when it involves prominent sporting families. The final decision rests with the players themselves, who must balance family ties, sporting opportunities, and personal aspirations.
