Minister of Agriculture Highlights Algeria’s Food Security Strategy in Rome

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine Walid, reviewed the major pillars of Algeria’s strategy to enhance food security and achieve sustainable development during his participation in Rome, Italy.

During his speech at the 49th session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Yacine Walid highlighted various development programs the government is implementing for farmers and breeders in rural, arid, and semi-arid regions, including the High Plateaus and the South. These initiatives specifically focus on connecting agricultural holdings to the electricity grid and opening rural roads, as well as providing infrastructure for investors in desert agriculture, such as roads, telecommunications, and logistical platforms.

Walid emphasized the significant importance the government places on modernizing the agricultural sector by relying on scientific research, technology, innovation, and digitalization. The goal is to improve agricultural productivity and rationalize the use of natural and financial resources.

On the sidelines of the session, the minister held talks with several agriculture ministers from participating countries and a bilateral meeting with Alvaro Lario, President of IFAD. The two parties discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and partnership between Algeria and this international institution, particularly in the field of technical support.

The 49th session of the IFAD Governing Council served as an occasion to review the organization’s key achievements over the past year and evaluate progress in implementing strategies aimed at supporting small-scale farmers, enhancing food security, and improving livelihoods in rural areas.

The discussions also addressed mechanisms to strengthen the resilience of rural communities against climate change and expand projects aimed at improving agricultural productivity and sustainably managing natural resources, in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
