Necessity of Including Tertiary Water Treatment in All Treatment Plant Projects

Minister of Irrigation Taha Derbal emphasized the necessity of incorporating modern technologies, specifically tertiary water treatment, into all projects involving the construction of wastewater treatment plants. During a briefing in the municipality of Chemora, accompanied by the Wali of Batna, Riyad Ben Ahmed, the minister explained that this initiative is part of efforts to optimize and reuse treated water. He noted that tertiary treatment allows for the expansion of agricultural irrigation to include all types of crops, including vegetables, rather than being restricted to grains and fruit trees.

The minister stressed the importance of reclaiming and reusing treated wastewater, highlighting the existing legal framework in the Official Gazette that regulates its use. He added that directives will be issued to all provincial directors within the sector nationwide to ensure the inclusion of modern technologies, such as tertiary treatment, in all upcoming treatment plant projects.

Following this, Derbal inspected the expansion project of the water treatment plant at the Koudiat Medouar dam in the municipality of Timgad. He called for rigorous monitoring of treatment plant projects, whether they involve expansion or rehabilitation. He also emphasized the need to adhere to quality and technical standards to achieve the goal of mobilizing more water resources to support the distribution of this vital commodity to the population.

In the city of Batna, the minister inspected the construction of a second wastewater treatment plant. The project has reached a 56% completion rate and is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.
