World Food Programme Warns of ‘Catastrophic’ Hunger Crisis in Afghanistan

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that Afghanistan is facing a “catastrophic” hunger crisis, amid worsening malnutrition rates that threaten the lives of millions of children.

John Aylieff, the WFP Country Director in Afghanistan, stated that the country is undergoing a “catastrophic food crisis,” explaining that approximately two-thirds of the population suffer from acute and serious malnutrition or have reached crisis levels, the highest percentage recorded in the country’s history.

He added that the lives of about four million children are now threatened due to the outbreak of acute malnutrition, at a time when the ability to provide basic food needs is declining.

The program noted that Afghanistan, exhausted by four decades of conflict, has long relied on foreign aid. It explained that the humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by the deteriorating economic situation and severe drought, in addition to two devastating earthquakes that struck the country in late 2025, as well as the return of about 5.3 million Afghans who were mostly deported from neighboring Pakistan and Iran, increasing pressure on limited resources.
