The Algerian Football Federation announced on Wednesday a series of strict sanctions issued by the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following the events that occurred during the Algeria-Nigeria match in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The decisions included a two-match suspension for goalkeeper Luca Zidane and a four-match suspension for defender Rafik Belghali, two of which are suspended. These sanctions will be served during the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, presenting the technical staff with the challenge of replacing two key players at the start of the upcoming campaign.
The sanctions also included heavy financial fines exceeding $100,000. These were distributed as follows: $75,000 for improper conduct by players and officials, as well as fan protests involving the waving of banknotes at referees; $20,000 for the use of fireworks, throwing projectiles, and security breaches by supporters; and $5,000 due to five players receiving cautions during the match.
In response to these decisions, the Algerian Federation announced that it has immediately initiated legal appeal procedures to contest these sanctions, which it described as unfair. The federation emphasized its commitment to defending the interests of the national team and following the case with the utmost attention to restore the rights of Algerian football.
