The Independent National Authority for Audiovisual Regulation stated on Saturday that solidarity work through audiovisual media channels remains subject to a binding legal and regulatory framework that ensures transparency and protects the public interest.
The Authority explained that with the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, it observed “some media channels broadcasting solidarity programs and campaigns, during which donations were collected without clarity regarding the beneficiary or the necessary management and transparency mechanisms.”
While the Authority values the “spirit of solidarity and synergy that characterizes Algerian society during this holy month,” it emphasizes that “the practice of solidarity work through audiovisual media channels remains subject to a binding legal and regulatory framework, ensuring transparency and the preservation of the public interest.”
The body noted that “in accordance with the powers granted to it, and pursuant to the provisions of Article 32 of Law No. 23-20, which requires audiovisual communication services to refrain from broadcasting or publishing any misleading or incorrect content, including programs or media campaigns, to ensure the transparency and objectivity of information and protect the public from deception,” it reminds that “any charitable activity or donation collection campaign in audiovisual communication media must be transparent and honest and must be carried out exclusively through legally authorized entities and organizations and in accordance with the legislation and laws governing this type of operation.”
The Authority also emphasizes “the necessity of preserving the dignity of the individuals covered by solidarity operations and not exploiting their situation in the media. Conversely, these campaigns must also not be exploited to promote individuals or use religious or emotional dimensions to achieve gains at the expense of the public interest, and such practices are subject to legal and regulatory oversight to ensure transparency, integrity, and compliance with the provisions of the law and professional ethics, especially in the media field.”
Accordingly, the Authority confirmed that it “will reserve its right to follow up on these violations and take all necessary legal and regulatory measures to ensure the protection of the public interest and maintain the sanctity of this holy month.”
