New measures in anticipation of the next agricultural season

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine Oualid, chaired a national meeting yesterday bringing together directors of grain and pulse cooperatives and officials from the Algerian Interprofessional Grains Office. According to a ministry statement, the meeting was dedicated to preparing for the 2025-2026 harvesting and threshing campaign, which is expected to begin in mid-April.

The meeting served as an opportunity to evaluate the plowing and sowing process for the current season and to monitor crop development and germination status across various regions of the country, including the east, center, west, and south. In preparation for the harvest campaign scheduled to start on April 12 in the southern provinces, the readiness of grain cooperatives to receive crops under optimal conditions was reviewed. This includes providing necessary logistics such as harvesters and trucks for transporting production, identifying collection points, and strengthening storage capacities.

In this context, the minister emphasized the importance of proactive and precise preparation for the campaign across all aspects. He stressed the need to mobilize public sector logistics and supplement them with private sector capabilities, particularly regarding trucks and warehouses. Yacine Oualid also highlighted the importance of equipping harvesters with grain loss detection devices to help minimize production waste.

The minister issued instructions to immediately begin drafting a comprehensive and detailed plan defining the distribution of logistics and collection points, as well as organizing production transfer operations between provinces based on needs and available capacities. To enhance agricultural mechanization, agricultural equipment will be supported and modernized starting this season. This follows the creation of a specialized branch of the “Agrodiv” group, in implementation of the President’s instructions, which will provide a diverse fleet of modern harvesters and various agricultural tools.

Additionally, a special program will be launched to develop pulse production as part of the crop rotation system, contributing to increased national production, improved yield per hectare, and the encouragement of sustainable agricultural practices. During the meeting, the minister recalled a series of measures to be adopted starting next season to improve the performance of the grain and pulse sector, confirming that preparations for the upcoming plowing and sowing season begin now.

He also discussed key upcoming reforms, most notably the review of the agricultural input support system, the generalization of soil and fertilizer analysis, and the introduction of new high-yield seed varieties adapted to the specific characteristics of different production areas, particularly soil nature and climatic conditions.
