Minister of Agriculture: Grain Storage is a Strategic Direction for the Algerian State

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine Walid, emphasized on Friday that grain storage has become a strategic direction for the Algerian state rather than a mere option. He stated that this initiative is part of ensuring food security, which serves as a fundamental pillar of national sovereignty.

During a field visit to El Menia province, Yacine Walid highlighted the state’s project to construct 30 strategic silos, each with a capacity of one million quintals, alongside 350 local storage centers. He noted that these efforts will increase Algeria’s total storage capacity from 4 million tons to 9 million tons, marking a decisive step toward food independence.

The minister explained that achieving this vision requires doubling grain yields from 15 quintals per hectare to at least 30 quintals. He stressed that this objective depends on adopting precise technical protocols and expanding cultivated land, particularly in the south, while increasing investment in modern irrigation techniques such as center pivots.

Furthermore, the minister committed to the scientific application of fertilizers based on soil analysis, the selection of seed varieties appropriate for each region, and the protection of crops from diseases.

He concluded by stating that the country is working toward building a modern, productive, and sustainable agricultural sector for future generations as part of a daily commitment.
