Algeria Moves to Adopt Bold New Energy Model, Minister Arkab Declares

Algeria’s Minister of State for Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, announced Monday that his sector is actively working to adopt a new energy model built on energy efficiency and the rational exploitation of national resources.

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch at the inauguration ceremony of the Inter-Sectoral Committee for Energy Management, Arkab stated that the committee’s establishment reflects a comprehensive national vision aimed at strengthening energy control and rationalizing consumption, amid rising domestic energy demand and the urgent need to preserve resources for future generations.

Arkab emphasized that the hydrocarbons sector is accelerating the deployment of clean technologies and modern techniques across production sites and industrial facilities, reducing self-consumption while boosting energy performance. He added that improved energy efficiency will lower operational costs and free up significant hydrocarbon volumes for industrial valorization or export, while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Key initiatives include solar energy projects at Sonatrach sites, energy audits across refineries, a green hydrogen strategy, reduction of gas flaring, and carbon capture technologies — positioning Algeria as a future clean energy exporter.
