WHO Certifies Algeria’s Elimination of Trachoma as a Public Health Problem

The World Health Organization has officially certified that Algeria has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, making it one of a select group of countries to achieve this landmark milestone.

Algeria’s Health Ministry told dzwatch that this recognition “places Algeria among nations that have successfully overcome one of the most complex challenges in global public health.” Trachoma is described as “the fourth infectious disease eliminated in Algeria” and remains the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a letter to Algerian Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Aït Mouâllek, stated that eliminating trachoma “represents a major public health success requiring long-term effort and dedication,” warmly congratulating the Algerian government on this “historic achievement.”

The ministry confirmed this victory reflects Algeria’s health policies built on prevention, equitable access to treatment, and improved living conditions — cementing Algeria’s standing as a leading nation in disease prevention.
