Dean of Algiers Grand Mosque: Algeria’s Religious Identity Is the Fruit of Centuries of Accumulated Scholarly Heritage

Sheikh Mohamed Mamoun Al-Qasimi Al-Hassani, Dean of the Grand Mosque of Algiers, declared Wednesday that Algeria’s national religious frame of reference is the product of centuries of cumulative historical maturity, not a response to any passing political circumstance.

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch at the opening of a national symposium titled ‘Luminaries of Algeria: Our Heritage in the Lives of Our Greats’, the Dean stated: “This religious identity was forged in scholarly circles, schools of jurisprudence, mosques, and village zawiyas — generation after generation.”

He highlighted towering figures such as Imam Abdel Rahman Al-Tha’alibi and Sheikh Abu Al-Abbas Al-Milyani as pillars of Algeria’s intellectual tradition, stressing that Algerian scholars “shaped society’s spiritual and intellectual stability across the ages.”

The symposium, held in commemoration of Knowledge Day and Heritage Month, featured academic presentations honoring Algeria’s religious and philosophical legacy, concluding with the recognition of participating researchers.
