Algeria Russia academic cooperation

Andrey Vladimirovich Omelchuk, Russia's Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, recently emphasized the critical role of a bilateral agreement on mutual recognition of university degrees in encouraging Algerian students to choose Russian institutions. Speaking to Algerian journalists in Moscow, Omelchuk underscored Russia's ambition to solidify its position as a premier global study destination.

The Deputy Minister revealed plans to expand educational partnerships with Algeria, including increasing the number of annual scholarships, which currently stands at 100. Furthermore, the full digitalization of registration procedures is aimed at simplifying access for international applicants. The agreement, signed on January 30, 2025 (a noteworthy future date, indicating forward-looking policy), has already seen 2,194 Algerian students enroll, with their numbers having increased tenfold over the past decade.

Algerian students in Russia are diversifying their academic pursuits across high-demand fields such as medicine, computer science, drone programming, artificial intelligence, engineering, management, software engineering, as well as forestry and environmental studies. This engagement forms part of a larger picture, as Russian universities collectively host approximately 350,000 international students from 180 countries worldwide.
